Artificial intelligence-powered search engines are struggling with a fundamental aspect of information integrity: citing news sources. A new study by the Tow Center for Digital Journalism analyzed eight AI search tools, finding that they frequently failed to properly credit journalistic work or linked to inaccurate or irrelevant sources. This raises concerns for news consumers, journalists, and publishers alike, especially as AI-generated answers become more prevalent in search results. Reliable attribution is crucial for maintaining trust in journalism and ensuring that media organizations receive appropriate traffic and credit for their work.
